The Stock Market Challenge lessons are designed to get challenge pupils to work in active learning scenarios, which may be unlike a more traditional textbook-based learning lesson.

The aim of the activity is for pupils to adopt the role of company directors to try and make as much money as possible.

Warning: This activity can lead to genuine excitement and deep engagement from pupils!

The challenge involves:

• Role play
• Groupwork
• Analytical skills to support decision making
• Risk taking
• Application of mathematical principles into a real-world context

Two key elements of the activity are:

1. Fluency

Firstly, they need to practise and perfect their fluency skills with regard to percentage increases and decreases.

2. Interpretation

To be successful with the challenge, pupils will need to quickly (but carefully) read and analyse the information available to them. Much of this information is in the form of graphs and requires the pupils to accuratelyinterpret graphical information at speed.
